ASVAB - On Tuesday, October 23rd, the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) will be given to all sophomores and any interested juniors and seniors. The ASVAB is used by all branches of the military as a qualification test. Students can learn which military occupations they qualify for as well as learn about civilian jobs that are related.
There is no obligation to the military for the test takers and students are encouraged to take this test in order to learn about their potential vocational skills. The test is administered by civilian personnel, assisted by the military recruiters, and requires about 3 hours. There is no charge to the student. Test scores and follow-up materials can be very useful tools for job exploration.
PSAT - On Wednesday, October 17th, the Preliminary Scholastic
Aptitude Test will be given in school. The PSAT is used for several
purposes. It provides students with an impartial evaluation of their
ability to do college-level work and compares their academic ability
with other college-bound juniors nationwide. The PSAT is a shortened
version of the SAT I, commonly referred to as the "College Boards,"
and gives students practice in taking this type of test. Another
very important use of this test is that it serves as the qualifying
exam for the National-Merit Scholarship competition. This is a
multi-million dollar scholarship program operated by the National
Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Students usually take the PSAT in October of their junior year.
There is a registration fee of $13.00 which must be paid prior to
the test date. College-bound juniors are encouraged to take this
test. Sophomores are permitted to test as well but they are not
entered into the scholarship competition.
