Important Ribbon Week Events

Monday, October 26th: Slipper Day, Wear your favorite slippers because “we are giving drugs the slip!” Also, on Monday, the Empowered Teens will be doing Project Sticker Shock after school at Stewarts, Wendy’s, and Sunoco. We will walk to those stores after 10th period, and place stickers on multi-packs of beer and wine coolers, reminding adults not to buy alcohol for minors.
Tuesday, October 27th: Mismatch Day, Wear mismatched clothing because “drugs and I don’t match!”
Wednesday, October 28th: Wear Red to honor Kiki Camarena, the drug enforcement agent killed on duty. Red Ribbon Week is in honor of Kiki, and his motto, “I’m only one person, but I can make a difference.”
Thursday, October 29th: Wear your favorite team jersey/t-shirt, because “we all are teaming up against drugs!”
Friday, October 30th: Wear a Halloween costume that celebrates your favorite drug-free celebrity, or wear a costume that shows you want to be drug-free (i.e., a No Smoking sign, a huge Red Ribbon etc.) Empowered Teens will take pictures of these contestants, and a winner will be determined the following week. Also, on Friday, Grade 7-12 Empowered Teen dance at the Knights of Columbus from 7-10 pm to celebrate Drug-Free Fun!

Red Ribbon Week - From Mrs. White

All through the week, students from any grade may submit a poster, essay, poem or drawing related to drug/alcohol use, for instance, my favorite drug free celebrity, a drug free hero in my own life (teacher, parent etc), how drugs and alcohol have affected my life (this will not be displayed unless I have specific permission from the student.) Final deadline for these contests will be Friday morning, first period. All submissions can be dropped off at my office, either to me or the students can slide their work under my door. Elementary students can do drug-free coloring sheets; please let me know if you’d like coloring sheets for your students.
Every student who submits a piece of art or writing will win a participant prize, and a winner will also be chosen, most likely the following week. Coloring sheets will be a raffle-type drawing. Those who dress up in drug-free Halloween garb on Friday will receive a small prize and there will be a winner announced the following week. If I have missed a student who dressed up in a drug free Halloween costume, please let me know, or have them stop by so we can take their picture and reward them.
I and the Empowered Teens will try and catch as many students and staff who are participating in dress-up days and/or have their red ribbons on; these participants will be given a small candy. I know that last year I missed students, and there was disappointment. Please, please, please, do not be afraid to call me or leave me a message that your classroom has been neglected. I will be happy to stop by and reward your students’ (and your) efforts. I will do my best to get everyone.
