Not
sure how to describe all the wonderful costumes this year so I made
up some words. There were cute costumes, scary ones, creative ones
and everything in between. I know there were three cameras trying to
catch everyone and I hope we did. Great job to all those who
participated in the parade. Thank you to all the parents who helped
and to all who knew we had enough help and gave us some space, this
a hectic activity. Thanks to the Student Council members who lent a
helping hand and acted as judges, that is never an easy job with so
many winning costumes. We wish everyone a fun and safe Halloween
night. Remember - watch out for cars, carry a flashlight and stay
safe!

I
love the corny stuff don't I? From Mrs. Jones - "Mike Brennen from
the Visitor's Interpretive Center at Paul Smiths visited CCS today
to teach fourth graders about some of the different types of owls
that can be found in the North Country. Mr. Brennen showed the
children a slide show presentation and explained some of the
adaptations that owls have that help them to survive. The highlight
of the presentation was the live barred owl that Mr. Brennen brought
with him. The children really enjoyed watching the owl and its
amazing movements." Due to a dying camera battery there are only a
few pictures to share.

On
October 13th, Jody Maneely and Steve McDonald from Cornell
Cooperative Extension in Malone visited Mrs. Jones' and Mrs.
Vanier's fourth grade classrooms. The children participated in a
science experiment called "Bio-fuel Blast". The children learned
about bio-fuels and the importance of finding ways to use renewable
resources to create gases that can be used in place of nonrenewable
resources. The children put yeast, corn syrup, and water into soda
bottles and then mixed the ingredients together. The children then
attached a balloon to the mouth of the bottle. Once mixed, the
ingredients produced a gas. Evidence of the gas was the fact that
the balloon began to inflate. The children had a great time and
learned a lot of new facts. Thanks goes out to Mrs. Maneely and Mr.
McDonald for their time. - Thanks Mrs. Jones for the write up -

September 24, 2009 - "Students
from Mrs. Jones' and Mrs. Vanier's fourth grade classes attended the
4-H Conservation Day at Camp Overlook on September 24th. The
students had the opportunity to learn about some of the plants and
wildlife that can be found in and around the Adirondacks. They
learned about animal adaptations, acid rain, water conservation, the
maple syrup industry, different types of trees, different types of
plants, and about "survival of the fittest". The weather was
beautiful and everyone left with a wealth of new knowledge! Special
thanks to the presenters from our area, Mr. Bill Wood and Mr. Steve
McDonald." - Thanks Mrs. Jones

"For
"Take a Child Outside" week starting on September 24, Mrs.
Gardiner's Nutrition, Health and Fitness Classes were able to
take most of the elementary classes on nature walks. The nice
weather made these walks an opportunity to enjoy fresh air, make
nature bracelets, and get some exercise. Some of the older students
marked a trail in the woods. All the students from Pre-K to grade 12
gained a greater appreciation for our natural world during this
week. Enjoying the outdoors helps children connect with the natural
world, focus in school and reduce the chance of obesity." - from
Mrs. Gardiner. We have a few pictures for now with more expected.

Updated on July 28, 2009 - Back to school has become much simpler. With the summer vacation nearing the halfway point, it's time to
start thinking about purchasing school supplies for next year.
A list of the school supplies that you will need to buy was included
in your child's report card envelope along with your child's report
card.
This is a reminder to parents that we will have available for
purchase a "back to school supply kit" that will contain most of the
supplies that your child will need for the coming year. Our goal is
to save you time and money by putting the kits together and
purchasing the materials for the kits when they are on sale.
The price of the kits will probably range from $4.00 to $12.00
depending on the amount of supplies that your child's teacher
requested. The kits will be ready when they come back to school.
If you are interested in purchasing a kit but have not
already expressed interest in doing so, please call Chandra or Mrs.
Fowler at 497-6420 by THIS FRIDAY (July 31).
Unfortunately kits will not be available to those who call until a
later date as we need to concrete numbers to determine how much of
each item to buy.
If you choose to purchase school supplies on your own please keep in
mind the new color system we are trying this year (See above).
Please keep in mind that the if you purchase the cloth book covers
that you will need to buy the "jumbo" size. The regular "one size
fits all" will not fit our textbooks.

Please be aware that Double Dismissal time is considered part of the regular school day. If your teacher requests that your child stay for double, it is because important academic intervention has been planned for your child. Please do not schedule any appointments during this time.
