Celebrating a first milestone

kgradNearly 40 students were recognized for successfully completing kindergarten this morning at the annual Kindergarten Graduation Ceremony held in the CCS auditorium. Mrs. McCormick and Mrs. Cartier put together a wonderful program about the earth and the many habitats that make up the earth. There were many great singers, lots of fun dancing and tons of talent on display. I know they thank all the parents for supporting their children all year long. As usual I have many pictures to share including all the diploma shots. I will post them in two formats: Format 1: these are best suited for viewing on the web and will load more quickly - Format 2: there are the high resolution pictures that are suitable for downloading and printing. These will take time to load. They are large files. I will also be posting their cap and gown pictures soon in high resolution. Congratulations to all the graduates. Format 1 Pictures (smaller sizes) - Format 2 Pictures (high resolution).

High Falls Park trip

From Mrs. Watson - "Mrs. Watson's class enjoyed a sunny morning at High Falls Park on June 11th. They walked the nature trails and campsite roads, played on the playground, and had a picnic lunch in the pavilion. We thank Mrs. Stumpf for spending the morning with us, as well! The boys and girls represented our school nicely while visiting the snack bar, using the restrooms, and playing outside." PICTURES

Field Trip

From Miss Helm - "Grade 5 students and teachers spent Thursday, June 11, at Clinton Community College, just outside Plattsburgh on Route 9S. After signing in, we received bags with items we would need to use during the five fun sessions of experiments, observations, and graphing the results. CCS students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed the day.
We were joined by fifth graders from other schools in our area. Miss Helm’s Alpha group was joined by Mrs. Eaglefeather’s students from Plattsburgh." PICTURES

Pet Week

Again this year, we are continuing our annual tradition of collecting donations to benefit the North Country Animal Shelter in Malone. The shelter is always seeking donations of dog and cat food, dog bones, dog and cat toys, dog collars and leashes, used towels and blankets, as well as cat litter. We will be collecting from May 1, 2009-May 14, 2009, centering the collection on Be Kind To Animals Week which runs from May 3-May 9. Students who bring in donations will have their name entered in a drawing for a $25.00 gift certificate to Wendy’s Quick Stop. The winner’s name will be chosen on May 15, prior to our culminating activity of watching an animal themed movie in the auditorium.
As always, thanks for your help with this worthwhile cause! The area’s stray animals will benefit so much from it!
Miss Cook - Ms. Harrigan - Mrs. Swanston - Mrs. Vanier

(Please not that high school students can drop off items with Mrs. Allen or Mrs. Swanston. There will be a separate $25.00 gift certificate for the high school students.)

Over $6,000

jumpropeWhen the numbers came in CCS raised over $6,000 at the recent Jump Rope for heart event. The final tally was $6,192.67 which was much higher than last year's event. In a tough economic climate it is amazing how giving the community continues to be. Mrs. Reynolds would like to thank all the elementary students who participated along with all the high school students who sponsored someone and helped with each of the many stations. The folks who organized the event were very impressed with all the participation from across the whole building. Mrs. Gardiner and Ben Trombley were on hand to take a few pictures. Great Job! PICTURES

Reading Aloud

Mrs. Campbell was scurrying around the elementary wing snapping up many pictures of all the people who volunteered to read during National Library Week's reading aloud program. She would like to thank all those who gave of their time and talents to read to the students. And I would like to thank her for the pictures. It looks like everyone had a great time. A little of this...and that

There was a road trip to Mr. Woods maple business and some pictures with flags. I know this because the cameras were returned with these pictures...but no stories. If you have some details...please send them along.

Jump Rope for Heart

     When: Wednesday, April 29th 2009
     Who: Grades 2-6
     Where: The big Gym
     Time: 2:15 to 3:15
Purpose: Jumping Rope to raise funds for the American Heart Association
Jump Rope for Heart offers many benefits. First, the money our school raises will help fund potentially life saving research into heart and blood vessel disease and stroke, our nation's No. 1 and No. 3 killer. It will also fund the development of educational materials that teach the importance of heart health and staying fit. Our school also earns gift certificates for physical education equipment.
Jump Rope for Heart will benefit your child, too. Besides being fun, it teaches jump rope skills and the importance of physical activity and community service. The students will be participating in different "jump rope" activities during 10th period on April 29, 2009.
Jump Rope for Heart builds school spirit and helps connect our school with the community. Your child was given a Jump Rope for Heart collection envelope. Please fill out the information on the front and put all checks received inside. Have your child bring this envelop into school to their classroom teacher by April 29. Family and friends are welcome to support your child's participation by making contributions.
Children should not go door-to-door or ask strangers for donations. Checks payable to: American Heart Association
We look forward to your child's participation in this very important effort. Thank you for you support.

Brod Bagert

bagert"I want my poems to be entertaining - dramatic language recited in character by a performer to an audience." -- Brod Bagert

Poet Brod Bagert came to CCS for two days of poetry, instruction and fun for all. He began his visit to Chateaugay with an evening presentation. He signed books and met with fans of all ages. On Friday, students in grades 4-12 were given a chance to see him speak about his books and his profession. His presentation was well received by all students. The younger students left the auditorium laughing and saying that it was "awesome". the older students heard words of inspiration about writing in general, not just poetry. You can learn more about Mr. Bagert by visiting his website. We thank him for his time, energy and inspiration and hope he had a good time here in Chateaugay.

Howdy Partner

westerndayI was walking down the hall to see Mrs. Fowler when I ran into a cowboy. A real live cowboy in the halls of CCS. Then I saw another one. Then a cowgirl. For a moment t looked like a wild west rodeo. I sent down one of the media students to check out the situation and sure enough...we were over run by cowboys and cowgirls. I think they were herding cattle. Actually, I found out that it was a western day theme in the kindergarten classes. Pictures

SEND US YOUR OLD JEANS !

bradyAustin Brady, a 4th grader at CCS decided it would be a great idea to join efforts with National Geographic and help restore homes that have been victim to natural disasters in the United States. Austin has an interest in hurricanes and tornadoes and would like to help people who have lost their homes. Austin said, “Lots of people in our country have to build new homes because a tornado or hurricane ruined their house. I read that old jeans make a good insulation for houses. This a good project to help those people.”

The denim jeans that are collected will be reduced to small fibers and created into insulation for homes. Austin was excited to present this to the Science Club, who overwhelmingly accepted the challenge. NOW we need your help. It takes 500 pairs of jeans to recycle enough denim to insulate one average-size U.S. house.

National Geographic (http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/Stories/MoreStories/Guinness-clothes) is asking for help in setting a Guinness World Record for total number of jeans recycled.

Follow these rules to help us create the largest collection of clothes to recycle:

1. The denim must be used.
2. The denim can be any brand.
3. The denim can be any color or size. NO DOLL CLOTHES!

The Science Club has set up a few boxes around the building for collection or you can bring them to Ms. Gratto’s room. We will be taking jeans until the end of school.

Who is that masked man?

Make that.."Who are those masked kids?" Actually, they are yours. Mrs. Simonsen and some of her French students headed down to the elementary wing to work on a Mardi Gras project. Feathers. Glitter. Glue. Construction paper. All the ingredients were there for a successful cross curricular project. PICTURES

Ski Trip

skitripIt was warm and wonderful on the mountain last week when the 4th and 5th grade students took to the slopes at Titus Mountain. Many first timers were given tips and hints from the members of the ski club along with the Ski Club chaperones. Thanks as always to the school board for continuing to make the trip possible. We have quite a few pictures from all the fun in the afternoon sun. PICTURES

J-E-L-L-O

JelloFrom Mrs. Harrigan - "On February 10th, Mrs. Cartier's Kindergarten class traveled up to Mr. Jagger's classroom to learn more about the heart. The children used stethoscopes to listen to their hearts beat, observed the effects of exercise on their heart rate and performed a simulation of blood being pumped by the heart. Mrs. Gratto shared a model of the human heart and preserved pig hearts. Afterwards they enjoyed tasty, heart shaped Jell-O Jigglers."  PICTURES

Some Odds and Ends

I have a few batches of photos to share from the art room as well as the science wing in the high school. I did not get many details about the pictures but I could not sit on them any longer. Besides, I think the pictures tell a great story all by themselves. SCIENCE PICTURES - ART PICTURES

Smiles

kindergartenI know what you have been missing lately....some cute pictures of kids being kids. We needed some candid photos for the newsletter so I sent Danielle and Briana into the Kindergarten classes for a few quick photos. They grabbed some great pictures which are sure to make you smile. PICTURES We hope to make this a more frequent addition. With the cold weather outside we need something to warm us up. Thanks for the photos ladies. And thanks to the kindergarten students for the great smiles and poses.

Ski Trip

It is nearly time for the annual trip to Titus Mountain for the 4th and 5th grade students. There is an informational meeting scheduled for next week. Read more about it HERE.

Cooking up some cookies

The Pre-K class traveled to the High School wing this week to make cookies with Mrs. Gardiner's Career and Economics class. If you are feeling a bit down by the hectic time then you need to see some of these pictures. They are sure to bring a smile to your face. PICTURES

Poinsettias

The defining plant for the holiday season gets some attention from elementary students - From Mrs. Dumas - "The classes listened to  a story called The Legend of the Poinsettia.
The fourth graders then helped the first graders assemble a beautiful poinsettia fan.  Both the older and younger students enjoyed working together." Pictures

Getting Ready for the Holidays

precalcWe present a mixed bag of photos from many craft projects going on in the elementary wing in preparation for the holidays. From Mrs. Dumas "Students in Mrs. Dumas' class were hard at work creating Christmas crafts to give as gifts.  Special thanks to our kind helpers, Mrs. Wendy Spence, Mrs. Terri LaPlante, and Mr. Craig Dumas.  We needed all the extra hands to keep track of each tiny piece!  We hope you enjoyed the keepsakes." There are some pre-calc students posing with pre-k students showing off some calendars. Thankfully the younger students taught the older ones how to color inside the lines. You can find some photos of students reading and students listening intently to a great story. And these are just the tip of the iceberg. There are MANY more projects going one right now. Hopefully we'll have more for you soon.  PICTURES

Reindeer Food

gardinerStudents from Mrs. Cartier's kindergarten class worked with Mrs. Gardiner's Career and Financial Management Class to create some Christmas ornaments recently. Mrs. Gardiner's room also hosted Mrs. McComb's pre-k class. The school's youngest students learned how to make "reindeer food". Thanks to Mrs. Gardiner we have some really great pictures of the collaborative projects. Pictures

Cooking up some math problems

lobdellRecently students in Mrs. Lobdell’s class completed a math lesson on measuring with the help of Mrs. Parmeter’s high school students. Jessie Cushman, Megan Patterson, Katie Boadway, Ashley Tice, and Brianna Poirier worked with these second grade students on reading a recipe for Apple Jack cookies, selecting the appropriate tools to use to measure and measuring the ingredients for this recipe. After the cookies were baked, Mrs. Lobdell’s class shared them with Mrs. Watson’s class and others in the school as well as family members at home. Everyone agreed this was a delicious math lesson! Pictures

Dance, Dance

casinodancBefore Thanksgiving break students in the elementary were given a chance to show off their dance moves at an event sponsored by the Freshman class. Billed as the "Casino Dance", students were given a chance to win prizes at different stations as well as on the dance floor. Sorry for the delay with the pictures but I had to track down the cameras. The students who borrowed them did not return them. We have quite a few pictures. Batch 1 - Batch 2

Open House Highlights

This may well have been the most spirited and most attended Open House in many years. Lines to meet teachers, pick up report cards and have some spaghetti were long but the time passed quickly. There were many wonderful displays of student work on the walls and in the classrooms. W thank all who attended for their show of support and interest in their child's education. Since the Media & Tech students were mostly tied up with work throughout the night, Joshua Trombley and Ben Watson took the camera through the halls for some fun pictures. Here they are! - Here are some more pictures from the artwork in the hallway.

Make Like a Tree and Leave

The best jokes never grow old. Here are some students investigating the properties of leaves. PICTURES

Halloween Parade

halloween toiletI had many cameras covering the action this afternoon so I hope we have a picture of every student. There were many great and inventive costumes once again this year (look for the large version of the Halloween toilet featured at the left.). The weather warmed up but it sure was windy. The snow and wet conditions did little to dampen the spirits of the students. There is another batch of photos yet to come. For now enjoy all the great costumes. Batch 1 - Batch 2 - Batch 3 - Batch 4 (the last ones - but over 300 pictures)

Spanish Decorations

spanish"Mrs. Swanston's Spanish IV invited Mrs. Watson's 2nd Grade Class to decorate "calaveras" or sugar skulls! The students enjoyed watching a short video clip on the Day of the Dead of Dia de Los Muertos and looking at the "ofrenda" made by all of Mrs. Swanston's classes! The students learned a lot from the ¡¡Muchas Gracias Señora Watson y sus estudiantes!!!" - From Mrs. Swanston PICTURES

Apologies

I apologize to elementary parents. I have put up much lately. Those in the school know how hectic the beginning of the year has been. Hopefully I will settle into a better routine. For now I have over 200 pictures from various events to share. Some of the stories about these pictures are in the newsletter. PICTURES

Party with a Purpose

audreys kidsOn Friday, September 5th the proceeds from the "Party with a Purpose" held at Roberta and Kevin O'Neill's house on August 30th were presented to Mrs. Fowler. The money will benefit the "Audrey's Kids Fund" that was established in memory of Audrey Roach. The purpose of the fund is to help children in need at CCS. In case you can't read it the check is for $12,280.00. In the picture are Kevin and Roberta O'Neill, David Roach, Mrs. Fowler and David and Audrey's children, Nathan and Rebecca. Thanks to all who contributed to this worthwhile cause and for continuing to remember a special person. Click on the photo for a high resolution image suitable for printing.

Constitution Day

constitution dayStudents in the Elementary wing of the school learned about the constitution today from 8th grade students. The students were taught by members of Mr. Flaherty's 8th grade classes. There were a variety of activities prepared to help the younger students learn more about our constitution and the men who authored the document. Students from the Media & Tech class signed out of their study halls to take pictures of a few of the classrooms and presenters. So let's review...elementary students presented with lessons prepared by 8th graders and pictures provided by high school students...with so much cross curricular work no wonder our school is so strong and getting better every day. Parent Orientation Night

parent nightAnother successful night of meet and greet for the parents and staff at CCS. It is always encouraging to see so many parents participating in these events and we thank them for their attendance and for their support all year long. We all look forward to a wonderful school year working with your children. And I would like to thank Mrs. Fowler for the pictures and for helping the newly formed Media and Technology class get a new camera. We plan to put it to good use. PICTURES

I keep looking for new, yet simple ways to share pictures with you. I am trying to use google web albums and their slideshow feature. Here are some random pictures of students during the first week of school. Photos courtesy of the Tech & Media Class.
